Personal, Social & Health Education and Relationships and Sex Education
PSHE
Subject Overview
At Longfields, we aim to ensure that children gain knowledge and understanding in all areas of the PSHE curriculum, which will help to navigate them through the next stage of their life. Pupils will be able to understand their rights and responsibilities in order to help them develop integrity and independence for their environment and local community. We incorporate wellbeing throughout our PSHE curriculum to promote self-esteem and emotional development to best prepare them for challenges that they may face in the future. Our Fundamental British values are also covered throughout the curriculum to give our school community cohesion and their overall cultural development.
RSE
RSE stands for Relationships and Sex Education. These sessions are taught during PSHE lessons and intertwined with our PSHE curriculum. As of September 2026, schools must follow the Relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education statutory guidance, published by the DfE in July 2025. Relationships are taught from Year 1 all the way until Year 6, with Sex Education being taught in Years 4-6. Sex Education includes puberty and the changes in our bodies during this time, conception and the pregnancy and birthing process. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from the lesson on conception, this can be discussed with their class teacher nearer the time of the lesson.
If you were unable to attend our meeting on June 30th about the new changes to our PSHE/RSE curriculum, below is a link to a summary of the changes in our curriculum. RSE & PSHE: Curriculum guide for parents and carers - 2026/27
Here is the presentation that we shared:
Some interesting questions were posed at the PHSE Parents Meeting 30.06.26
Online content – does this cover deep fakes?
- Is pornography covered? 30% of children see pornography before the end of primary
- school
- Do children learn that posting pictures on social media mean they are no longer
- theirs?
- Influencers on-line – how is this covered? (How is misogyny, certain ways to behave
- etc addressed)?
- How do we cover gender and sex stereo types?
- Just because it’s online doesn’t mean it’s true
- Teaching children it’s ok to love themselves as they are is important
- How do we deal with other genders, different types of family relationships, non-binary?
- How is puberty dealt with?
- How do we deal with “are you a boy or a girl” questions – more children to children so
- they understand better?
- Year 4 music teacher explained this very well
- Influencers – it’s not real – how can this be explained (flying first class, living lavish
- lifestyles etc
- Female beauty standards
- Would be helpful if the Parents session could be online for families who cannot
- attend in school. Possibly do a session later 5pm or 6pm
- How do we sensor check that the children have understood the learning?

Communication
With the new changes to the curriculum, we are committed to communicating clearly the language and key topics that will be discussed in our PSHE/RSE lessons. At the start of each topic, we will send home a copy of a knowledge organiser which outlines key vocabulary and definitions of the words that we will be using in our lessons. If you have any questions or concerns about the vocabulary used then please speak to your class teacher or Mrs Goodes.
Our Aims
At Longfields Primary School, we aim to provide a relevant PSHE curriculum to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities of life.
These aims ensure that the curriculum enables pupils to develop the knowledge and understanding of their own and different beliefs. Pupils will be able to understand their rights and responsibilities and develop integrity and independence in building respect for their environments and communities. We aim to promote self-esteem and emotional development and to help our pupils to form and maintain satisfying relationships with family, peers and the larger community around them.
