Year 5- Woodpeckers Class

Hello and welcome to Woodpeckers Class!
English
In English last term, the children explored the poetry of William Blake. We analysed the imagery of several of his poems before the children then wrote their own. They then performed these to the class!
We also looked at the text 'The Dam', written by David Almond. The children spent some time exploring the book looking at the characters, the setting and the illustrations. They worked hard to produce some wonderful writing which reflected what it would have been like for residents who had to leave their homes in the Kielder Valley to make room for the dam.
Maths
In Maths, we have been looking at fractions. The children have been practising converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, as well as adding and subtracting fractions.
We have also been practising our multiplication and division skills. The children have been multiplying 4-digit numbers but 2-digit numbers, and using short division methods to divide 4-digit numbers.
Science
In Science, we have been looking at properties of materials. The children have been exploring the transparency and conductivity of materials and assessing their suitability for different purposes. We have had great fun conducting experiments this term!
Geography
Our geography topic this term has been 'The Alps'. The children has great fun exploring the world maps and finding the countries that the Alps are located in. We also conducted some research into the Alpine town of Innsbruck in Austria and the children used what they learnt to create tourist brochures!

Art
The children have been looking at installation art this term. They have been looking at the purpose and meaning of installation art and exploring the role that scale, colour and mixed media have in conveying a message.

Homework
Reading
Please make sure you are reading with your child as much as possible. Reading with an adult is so crucial and can make such a difference. Your child has been given a yellow reading record which is due in every Friday. They can use this to record independent reading, as well as reading with an adult.
Spelling
Your child will be given 10 spellings to practise each week. They will be handed out on Friday with a spelling test to take place on the following Friday.
Maths
Timestable practise is so important as it supports children's understanding in all of their maths lessons. Children are encouraged to use TTRockStars to practise this skill.
